Suzanne Schmollgruber is the school director of the Centro del Bel Libro Ascona. Her responsibilities include teaching courses, coordinating guest instructors and overseeing the continued development of the program. Thanks to her broad international experiences and contacts, she is always able to bring new impulse to the department of Bookbinding and Design. Suzanne Schmollgruber trained as a hand bookbinder in Lausanne and Sion from 1988 until 1992. In 1992/1993 she attended a year long advanced training program at the CBL under the direction of Edwin Heim. Between 1994 and 2007 she continued her advanced training in different countries with other well known professionals such as: Hedi Kyle, Peter Aegerter, Jean-Luc Honegger, Suen Evrard, Carmencho Arregui and Pamela Moore. From 1993 until 1996 she worked as a hand bookbinder with Rolf Bommer in Basel and at the Basel Paper Mill Museum for paper, writing and printing. From 1996 until 2005 she worked in Barcelona as a free-lance bookbinder running her own workshop. During that time she also taught courses in her studio and at schools throughout Spain. In 2005 she moved to Milan, Italy where she continued her free-lance work as a fine binder and taught nationally and internationally. As the director of the CBL, Suzanne travels worldwide to participate in fairs and exhibitions and as a guest lecturer.

Current Position: His work explores the book itself, a seemingly antiquated Technology that is still purposeful in a digital age. The codex, which literally means a block of wood in Latin, is undeviating in its essential form. As an artist his goal is to transform how a book functions outside a linear read for an outdated technology, the codex, becomes something that is new and visually meaningful. From 1975 until 2011, several Artist-in-residence positions and Fellowships all over the United States. Area of Speciality: Since 1979 he began changing the books structure by pushing the physical properties of the book, excavating, folding, gouging and piercing it. Further Information: In the last twelve years, she participated regularly in exhibitions organized by ARA, APPAR and Designer Bookbinders. She was selected to take part in the Ephémères exhibitions organized at the Wittockiana (Brussels) and in Paris (Amis de la Reliure Originale). Her decorated papers and bindings were exhibited in Tournai, Peruwelz, Brussels and Liège. Professional Training, Career Born in Hungary, Sün Evrard has lived and worked in France since 1971. Between 1972 and 1976, she studied bookbinding, gold tooling and book design at the Ecole de l’Union des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Current Position She has worked as a designer bookbinder since 1978. Teaching has always been part of her activities, first at the school where she studied, then at the Atelier d’Arts Appliqués du Vésinet. Though she gave up regular teaching a few years ago, she still gives lectures and masterclasses abroad, in English, French and Hungarian. Area of Speciality In the past few years her work has mainly been oriented towards book-friendly design-bindings for antiquarian books using a bookstructure she developped: the staple binding. Further Information A solo exhibition of her design bindings was shown in the Historical Library of Paris in 1995. An illustrated catalogue was published at this occasion. She was initiator of the artist-book group exhibition “containers for intragrammes”, currently in the collection of the Mariemont Museum in Belgium. She takes regularly part in artist-book exhibitions in France and abroad. She was one of the nine founding member of the AIR neuf mouvement which curated exhibitions in France, Belgium and the USA. She is co-author, with Annie Persuy of a bookbinding manual, “La reliure”, published by Denoël and later translated into German and Spanish. Her Website:
