Changes at the centro del bel libro ascona from 2023

2023 will be a year of change for the centro del bel libro ascona. Suzanne Schmollgruber, having been Director of the school and its foremost teacher for 13 years has decided to resign with effect from the end of 2022. The Board wishes already at this time to express its thanks and appreciation for her work, which has been outstanding both in content and in its delivery by her as a teacher. She will still be available in Ascona for two courses as a guest teacher in 2023. Alice Fischer, PR Coordinator, is also resigning as of the end of 2022, and we are most grateful to her too for the commitment she has shown.
Bea Corti will continue to be responsible for the administration of the parent organisation.

From 2023 the centro del bel libro ascona will diversify its course offering. As well as the courses in Ascona, which will continue to be offered by guest teachers, and which will continue to be courses for professional and experienced amateur bookbinders, courses will now additionally be offered in Zürich in the Schule für Gestaltung SFGZ. With these two locations the centro del bel libro will be able to appeal to a broader audience: in addition to the themes of bookbinding and book restoration we will now build a further core theme of book design.

The programme for 2023 is currently in development through a working group of the Board of the centro del bel libro, and will be ready after the summer break.
The courses for 2022 will be delivered as previously advertised. Individually tailored training can also be delivered in 2022, insofar as agreed with Suzanne Schmollgruber.
The centro del bel libro ascona and its staff look forward to welcoming participants to its courses.

No. 09 - Binding in the Style of Jean de Gonet
Monday, 02. May 2022 to Friday, 06. May 2022

In this course we will complete a half leather binding in the style of Jean de Gonet. In the early 1970’s, Jean de Gonet revolutionized the French bibliophile community with the introduction of his unique binding style. Working originally as a graphic artist, Gonet soon dedicated himself to bookbinding and developed an exciting new binding technique where the structural aspects of the binding become integral to the design. The binding we will create in this workshop has exposed sewing along the spine. The cover boards are designed separately from the book block, but it is at the attachment of the boards where design and structure are brought together.

No. 10 - Designer Slipcase
Monday, 16. May 2022 to Friday, 20. May 2022

A designer slipcase fits the book perfectly, like a glove fits a hand and protects it completely from dust and light. The tailored rounded spine shape gives the slipcase a nice and snug feel. Participants can choose if they want to apply the opening horizontally, vertically, diagonally or free form.
Please bring along 2 to 3 of your own bound books. Ideal format: maximum A5.

No. 11 - Binding with Attached Boards and Paper Decoration
Monday, 23. May 2022 to Friday, 27. May 2022

This simple binding structure with attached boards is sewn on cloth tapes and is adhesive free. The structure allows for a multitude of possibilities and a variety of styles. The spine is rounded in a very natural way and completely without adhesives. The covers are made by layering papers of various colours. The papers are chosen intuitively and then arranged flush with each other.
The result is an elegant design that can be executed quickly.
This binding technique is reversible and is also suitable for the conservation of valuable books.

Course Programme:
-Application of the technique using blank sheets.
-Application of the technique using a disbound book.
- Variation of materials and technical possibilities.
- Creation and development of flush paper decoration.
