cbl-Newsletter July - August 2022

Topic: People

It is not only the pleasure of beautiful books that is characteristic of the centro del bel libro, but also the people who actively support the cbl. Some visibly, many in the background who hardly ever appear, but all working heart and soul for the centro del bel libro.
At the last general meeting, Michelle Wenger, Konrad Siegenthaler and Peter Henssler resigned from the board, all people who have been active for and committed to the centro del bel libro for many years. Hans Burkhardt has also resigned after more than 25 years of service, and he was awarded honorary membership by our President, Dieter Kläy for his very laudable work.

General assembly of the centro del bel libro ascona, and award ceremony by the Stiftung zur Förderung des Bucheinbandes (Foundation for the Promotion of Bookbinding)

The General Assembly 2022 was well attended and took place on May 21st in the Gutenberg Museum in Freiburg. This was followed by the award ceremony of the Stiftung zur Förderung des Bucheinbandes. The exhibition that followed was dedicated to the winners of the youth competition.

President Dieter Kläy looked back on 2021, which was a challenging year impacted by the Corona crisis. Although most of the courses were held, albeit under strict corona conditions and protective measures, many participants from abroad and especially overseas were unable to attend due to limited entry options. Special thanks went to the school principal Suzanne Schmollgruber, who could once again look back on a successful year of teaching, to Bea Corti for managing the secretariat, to Alice Fischer for her work in the school secretariat and to Elisabeth Mordasini for her work in the context of eduQua quality assurance.
As part of the overall elections for the Board, Urs Bernet, Elisabeth Mordasini, Dieter Kläy, Katy Meier, Markus Meyer, Christof Mühlemann, Ursula Reichlin and Moena Zeller were re-elected for a further term of office. Helma Kühn-Osius was re-elected by acclamation. Dieter Kläy bid farewell to Hans Burkhardt, Peter Henssler, Konrad Siegenthaler and Michelle Wenger from the Board, and honoured the great service they had rendered. For his decades of work for the cbl, but also for the craft of bookbinding in general, Hans Burkhardt was awarded honorary membership of the centro del bel libro ascona to great and prolonged applause.
The award for merit of the Stiftung zur Förderung des Bucheinbandes went to Hans Burkhardt and Thomas Isaak. Both were honored for their special contributions to the craft of bookbinding. The exhibition that followed was dedicated to the winners of the youth competition.
We are sad to see the retiring board members go, but gladdened by the return to the Board of Helma Kühn-Osius after a break. She introduces herself below.

Hello, may I briefly introduce myself?

My name is Helma Kühn-Osius. I'm very happy to be part of the cbl board again. I am a bookbinder and I love paper, pens, typography and games.
I did my apprenticeship in the craft in the Gutenberg city of Mainz with Erwin Hassdenteufel. In 2002 I was at cbl for four months, learning from Edwin Heim and others and enjoying cappuccino on the piazza. After that, life in Munich was a bit more organized: At the Meisterschule (to become master of the craft) I was allowed to practice countless gold cuts, study bookkeeping and set up folding machines. One of the best things was that I met Moena Zeller there and we literally ‘mastered’ the time together! In 2005 I moved to Zurich, worked in the bookbindery Pertusini and at BUBU. I had a husband and children and started a new phase as a family woman. I continued bookbinding in small stints and sometimes let it rest. Since 2019 I have been studying with CAS at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (University of the Arts) in the areas of creativity coaching, typography and Arts & Design in Practice. At the same time, I started to pass on my joy in “making things simple” and my passion for paper in workshops. In 2022 I will complete my last CAS and am looking forward to seeing where I can then work and design with people using bone folder, pen and ideas.
From September I will take care of the Instagram and Facebook channels for the centro del bel libro. I look forward to digital interactions and encounters with friends of the centro del bel libro, whether in the studio or in everyday life!

No. 17 - The German Paper Case Binding
Tuesday, 02. August 2022 to Saturday, 06. August 2022

This course is all about the “Edelpappband” or the German Paper Case Binding with a continuous end sheet fold (also known in North America as the “millimeter” binding) (max. dimension A6-A7). Case bindings with decorated paper covers are treasured among bibliophiles and are eagerly sought and collected. The instructor will give insight into the rich tradition of this binding style and will show how it can be interpreted in a contemporary context. Demonstrations will include how to use leather to reinforce the head, tail, corners and/or fore edges of the book. In addition, we will be stamping titles and making soft slipcases for our bindings.
The aim of the course is for all participants to learn step by step and make at least one German paper case binding.
