Bookbinding in the heart of Zurich
On 15th of May a large number of bookbinders met in Zurich to attend the opening of the newly equipped bookbinding workshop near Limmatplatz at “Schule für Gestaltung Zürich”. In his opening words Dieter Klay, president of the cbl (joint venture between the centro de bel libro and the “Schule für Gestaltung Zürich”) introduced this new cooperation between the two bodies/organisations. As a novelty, cbl offers bookbinding courses at its school on Limmatplatz which is only a stones throw away from Zurich main station. After this introduction Paul Renfer and Christian Burkhardt were present on the podium for some Q & A by Jorgé Ruiz and Urs Bernet. They looked at the past development of their craft and also discussed what the future might hold in terms of the bookbinding craft. |
What will mostly stay in participants minds from this opening event are the interesting exchanges between all the people present, the delicious polenta prepared by Piär Amrein, and the musical elements provided by Kayoz & the Mojo. When it was time to leave, many guests agreed that this had been the largest gathering of bookbinders in one place for a very long time. |
As usual we would like to draw your attention to further courses taking place soon in this new space, particularly the sessions offered by Paul Jackson and Renate Mesmer.
Paul Jackson has been a freelance artist seit 1983, specialising in cutting and folding of paper. He has taught at more than 80 art schools, design colleges and universities all over the world, has led countless seminaries and workshops and has published over 40 books. A gread deal of his renown is based on his 2011 bestseller “folding techniques for designers”. This has become a standard book of reference for everybody who uses folding in their design work. |
