Complementary techniques in the restoration of parchment

Parchment is an important historic writing material and also material used widely for book covers which requires the attention of archive and library book restorers.
This course discloses various techniques for stabilising and supplementing parchment used as writing material as well as book covers. We will look at and practise the most prominent supplementing methods. Furthermore, this course will look in detail at the potential supplementing materials but also at aspects of cleaning and hydration as well as smoothing. Last but not least this course will identify suitable glue variants for parchment restoration.
The objective of the course is to enable participants to identify suitable conservation methods on parchment restoration projects and to practise the necessary steps of procedure.
