Restoration of Leather Bindings and the use of Leather Free Alternatives
Learn how to fix the many problems that can arise when working with leather
The course will focus on the conservation of traditional leather bindings and will continue in the field of leather free alternatives and the restoration of cloth- and paper bindings. The goal of this course is to develop the daily work in restoration, experimenting with new techniques and the enhancement of conservational aspects. Finding the right technique is an important process and will be worked out step by step. We will work on techniques like rebacking with new leather, reattaching loose book covers or the use and advantage of alternative materials like cloth or others. This course will also address the coloring of leather and alternative materials, the handling of adhesives and the cleansing and care of leather.
The emphasis is on the practical conservation procedures, testing and interchange about various techniques amongst ourselves. Bring various damaged leather books with tight or hollow backs or other objects like cloth- and paperbooks which need first aid.
