Historical Endbands – Functionality and Reproduction
Monday, 7. September 2020 to Friday, 11. September 2020
Are a book’s endbands part of the sewing? Is the endband a necessary component of the book? What are the functions of historical endbands? What does an endband from the 15th century look like? We want to clarify these questions in this course and explore them in a theoretical and above all in a practical way. The study of historical endbands and their reproduction is the primary objective of this course. We will learn a variety of techniques selected from examples out of libraries and archives.
The use of traditional materials is a logical approach when working with historical techniques. With thread, paper, wooden covers, leather and tools we will make endbands according to historical models. We will be piercing, braiding and wrapping!
