The Flexible Parchment Binding

Parchment is an extremely hygroscopic material, which means that it can change dimensions significantly based on exposure to moisture and changes in humidity. Therefore, an adhesive-free binding is particularly advantageous when working with parchment. In this course we will learn a binding technique that takes a distinctly different approach from the traditional parchment binding style. The result is a refined binding that is tactile also very pleasing. In addition, we will prepare a soft case with flaps for our bindings.

Introduction to the World of Tessellation

In this course, we delve into the creative possibilities of tessellation and experience the transformation of a paper sheet into two and three-dimensional paper sculptures. First there will be an introduction to different folding techniques as we work with different types of paper and materials. We will then create product samples to see how the folding structures can be applied functionally. Thus, we can bring this fascinating art form to the functional design of books and packaging.

Non-adhesive Bindings – Part II

Here is the second part of non-adhesive bindings that extends beyond the most familiar styles. New styles will be presented and then practiced using a wide variety of suitable materials. Non-adhesive bindings continue to be popular not only because of their optimal functionality, but also because structural elements of the binding can become integral visual design elements. By making certain elements of the binding structure visible, bindings take on a special character that is all their own. Multiple samples will be completed in paper, primarily in smaller formats (up to DIN A5).

New Oriental Binding

The “New Oriental Binding” technique is contemporary interpretation of the traditional Japanese stab binding. Thanks to its clever configuration, this binding can open flat even with cross-grained paper. Most commonly this binding style is used in the USA and France. This binding allows for many different design possibilities that are not possible with the classic form. Leather, cloth, or paper may be used for your binding during the workshop. Additionally, we will be able to stamp the cover and make a soft slipcase for our books. Format: max. DIN A5 and max. 20 signatures.

Techniques by Hedi Kyle – Part III

We are excited to offer a third course with new and fascinating book structures developed by Hedi Kyle. We will create numerous new structures and explore many unique techniques using various materials.

Contemporary Book Structures

Set aside your traditional notion of a bound book and start from a different perspective: consider what a book is and how it should function mechanically. How should the STRUCTURE work in order to best integrate with and present your CONTENT? During this workshop we will explore some new approaches to building book structures that have emerged as answers to these questions.

The German paper case binding

This course is all about the “Edelpappband” or the German paper case binding with a continuous end sheet fold (also known in North America as the “millimeter” binding) (max. dimension A6-A7). Case bindings with decorated paper covers are treasured among Bibliophiles and are eagerly sought and collected. The instructor will give insight into the rich tradition of this binding style and will show how it can be interpreted in a contemporary context. Demonstrations will include how to use leather to reinforce the head, tail, corners and/or fore edges of the book.
